Count what is left before deciding anything
Being behind feels like one large problem and is usually several small ones carrying different values. So a specialist opens the gradebook before the syllabus. How many graded items remain, what each is worth, what the missed ones actually cost, and whether the marks still in play can reach the total you need.
That arithmetic answers the only question that matters this week. Sometimes it shows a term that is comfortably recoverable and a panic that was about volume rather than danger. Sometimes it shows two items already out of reach and effort that belongs to the other four. Either answer is worth more than a plan built on hope.
The order the work gets picked up in
Recovery has a sequence, and it is rarely the order a course lists things in. Weight per available hour decides, not chronology.
- Anything still open that carries real weight, drafted first whatever its date
- Items with a firm cut-off ranked above the ones a course will still accept
- Anything that releases later work, such as a proposal a paper is built on
- The repeating weekly items, restarted at once so the hole stops widening
- Everything remaining, ordered to protect the largest number of marks
The backlog and this week move together
Catching up while a course keeps running is two jobs, and taking them one at a time is why students stay behind. Next week arrives whether or not last week is finished, so both streams have to be moving from the first day.
That is a staffing answer rather than a scheduling trick. The repeating items are picked up immediately so nothing further is lost, and the backlog is rebuilt underneath at a pace that leaves them undisturbed. The two streams usually meet inside a fortnight, and the course stops producing new problems.
When the honest answer is no
Some terms cannot be saved, and a service unwilling to say so costs you twice. Where the remaining marks cannot reach a passing total, the reading says exactly that and nothing is charged for it.
Decisions still exist at that point and they belong with your academic advisor rather than with us: withdrawal dates, whether an incomplete is available, what a retake would cost in time. Where a term is recoverable, it runs as full class help, or as weekly work when only the repeating items are missing.

Questions
How far behind is too far?
It depends on weight rather than on weeks. A student missing four small items in a course whose final project carries most of the marks is in better shape than one who lost a single heavy midterm. Send the gradebook and a specialist works the total out in a couple of hours. Where the number cannot be reached, you are told so and charged nothing.
Can you cover work my instructor still accepts late?
Yes, and late-accepted items are usually where recovery starts, because marks that are merely reduced are marks that still exist. The plan takes them in order of what they are worth after any penalty, rather than in the order they were originally due. Anything with a hard close that has already passed is written off honestly instead of being quietly included.
Can you take only part of what I owe?
That is the common arrangement. Plenty of students hand over the backlog and keep the current week, or the reverse. Each item is scoped and priced on its own, so nothing forces you into a whole term. Say which pieces you want covered when you send the gradebook and the reading prices only those.
How quickly does work actually start?
Usually the same day scope is accepted, because a backlog does not benefit from a settling period. Pairing happens first, by credential in the subject, then the specialist drafts the highest-weight open item while the plan for the rest is still being written. Nothing waits for a calendar to be approved when a deadline has already passed.
Will the new work match what I submitted earlier?
Yes, and it matters more in a recovery than anywhere else, because a faculty member has already read several weeks of your writing. The specialist reads your earlier submissions for sentence length, formality and habits of phrasing before drafting, then keeps them. A sudden change of register in week nine is the kind of thing graders notice.
